No experience required.
KIDS MMA AT TJJA
MORE THAN PUNCHES AND KICKS.
Mixed Martial Arts combines several different areas of martial arts into one complete skill set.
At TJJA, kids learn age-appropriate striking, wrestling, takedowns and Jiu Jitsu while also learning how those skills connect.
They'll learn how to move on their feet, control distance, wrestle for position, defend takedowns and grapple on the ground.
Everything is introduced progressively, with an emphasis on technique, control and being a good training partner.
Kids don't need to want to become fighters to learn MMA.

COMPLETE BEGINNERS
No previous Jiu Jitsu, wrestling or striking experience is required. We'll teach them from the beginning.

ACTIVE KIDS
MMA gives energetic kids something challenging to learn while developing coordination, movement and athletic ability.

KIDS WHO WANT A CHALLENGE
There's always something new to improve. Students learn to work through difficult situations instead of expecting everything to come easily.
YOUNG COMPETITORS
For students who become interested in competition, MMA training can provide a foundation for more advanced training as they develop.

01 — STRIKING
Students learn age-appropriate footwork, punches, kicks, defense and how to control distance.
02 — WRESTLING
Kids develop takedowns, takedown defense, balance and the ability to control positions while standing.
03 — JIU JITSU
Students learn positional control, escapes and submissions while developing comfort and awareness on the ground.
04 — PUTTING IT TOGETHER
As students progress, they begin understanding how striking, wrestling and grappling connect as parts of Mixed Martial Arts.

QUESTIONS PARENTS ASK
BEFORE GETTING STARTED
Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or MMA for the first time? You probably have a few questions. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from new students at Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy.
Our Kids Jiu Jitsu program is for children ages 6–13. Kids develop at different rates, so we're less concerned with whether a child has previous experience and more interested in helping them learn at an appropriate pace.
No. Most kids begin with little or no martial arts experience. We'll teach them the fundamentals from the beginning and help them become comfortable training with a partner.
Like any physical sport, Jiu Jitsu involves some risk of injury. Classes are supervised, techniques are taught progressively, and students learn how to train safely with their partners. We work to create an environment where kids can train hard without treating every round like a competition.
It can. Jiu Jitsu gives kids the opportunity to learn difficult skills, practice them against resistance and see themselves improve over time. That kind of confidence comes from experience and accomplishment rather than simply being told to be confident.
Absolutely. Your child doesn't need to be fast, strong or coordinated before starting. Jiu Jitsu is a skill that develops through practice, and kids often discover strengths they didn't know they had.
Yes. Kids learn practical grappling skills including controlling positions, escaping from underneath another person, takedowns and maintaining control. We also teach students that knowing how to handle themselves doesn't mean they should be looking for opportunities to fight.
No. Our Kids Jiu Jitsu classes focus on grappling and do not include striking. For families interested in striking and MMA training, TJJA also offers a separate Kids MMA program.
No. Competition is completely optional. Some kids simply enjoy learning Jiu Jitsu and being part of the gym. Students who become interested in competing can talk with our coaches about additional training and competition opportunities.
Comfortable athletic clothing is fine for their first class. Shorts and a T-shirt or athletic top work well. There's no need to buy a bunch of Jiu Jitsu equipment before they know whether they enjoy training.
Kids Jiu Jitsu focuses primarily on grappling, including takedowns, positional control, escapes and submissions. Kids MMA introduces additional elements of mixed martial arts, including age-appropriate striking and learning how different ranges of martial arts work together.
Consistency matters more than trying to do too much too quickly. Regular attendance gives kids time to learn the techniques, become comfortable with their teammates and gradually improve. Our coaches can help you determine the right training schedule for your child.
Yes. Their first class is free. It's the easiest way for your child to see the gym, meet the coaches, get on the mats and find out whether Jiu Jitsu is something they enjoy.
