KIDS JIU JITSU AT TJJA
REAL JIU JITSU. TAUGHT FOR KIDS.
Our kids aren't just running through drills or playing martial arts games. They're learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a way that's appropriate for their age and experience.
Students learn takedowns, escapes, positional control and submissions while developing balance, coordination and body awareness.
As they improve, they also learn how to train with a partner, stay composed when something is difficult and keep working when they don't immediately succeed.
The goal isn't to turn every kid into a competitor. It's to help them become capable, confident students on and off the mats.

FIRST-TIME BEGINNERS
Most kids start with no martial arts experience. We'll teach them the fundamentals from the beginning.

ACTIVE KIDS
For kids who like to move, wrestle and challenge themselves, Jiu Jitsu gives that energy somewhere productive to go.

KIDS WHO NEED CONFIDENCE
Learning real skills and seeing themselves improve can help kids become more comfortable handling difficult situations.
YOUNG COMPETITORS
For students interested in competition, we offer opportunities to train harder, develop their Jiu Jitsu and test themselves against other kids.

We don't want kids walking around looking for a fight.
We want them comfortable enough that they don't feel like they have something to prove.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches children how to control another person, escape bad positions and protect themselves without depending entirely on punches and kicks.
Just as importantly, regular training gives kids experience dealing with pressure in a controlled environment.
Real confidence isn't telling a kid they're tough. It's giving them opportunities to discover what they're capable of.

QUESTIONS PARENTS ASK
BEFORE GETTING STARTED
Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or MMA for the first time? You probably have a few questions. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from new students at Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy.
Our Kids Jiu Jitsu program is for children ages 6–13. Kids develop at different rates, so we're less concerned with whether a child has previous experience and more interested in helping them learn at an appropriate pace.
No. Most kids begin with little or no martial arts experience. We'll teach them the fundamentals from the beginning and help them become comfortable training with a partner.
Like any physical sport, Jiu Jitsu involves some risk of injury. Classes are supervised, techniques are taught progressively, and students learn how to train safely with their partners. We work to create an environment where kids can train hard without treating every round like a competition.
It can. Jiu Jitsu gives kids the opportunity to learn difficult skills, practice them against resistance and see themselves improve over time. That kind of confidence comes from experience and accomplishment rather than simply being told to be confident.
Absolutely. Your child doesn't need to be fast, strong or coordinated before starting. Jiu Jitsu is a skill that develops through practice, and kids often discover strengths they didn't know they had.
Yes. Kids learn practical grappling skills including controlling positions, escaping from underneath another person, takedowns and maintaining control. We also teach students that knowing how to handle themselves doesn't mean they should be looking for opportunities to fight.
No. Our Kids Jiu Jitsu classes focus on grappling and do not include striking. For families interested in striking and MMA training, TJJA also offers a separate Kids MMA program.
No. Competition is completely optional. Some kids simply enjoy learning Jiu Jitsu and being part of the gym. Students who become interested in competing can talk with our coaches about additional training and competition opportunities.
Comfortable athletic clothing is fine for their first class. Shorts and a T-shirt or athletic top work well. There's no need to buy a bunch of Jiu Jitsu equipment before they know whether they enjoy training.
Kids Jiu Jitsu focuses primarily on grappling, including takedowns, positional control, escapes and submissions. Kids MMA introduces additional elements of mixed martial arts, including age-appropriate striking and learning how different ranges of martial arts work together.
Consistency matters more than trying to do too much too quickly. Regular attendance gives kids time to learn the techniques, become comfortable with their teammates and gradually improve. Our coaches can help you determine the right training schedule for your child.
Yes. Their first class is free. It's the easiest way for your child to see the gym, meet the coaches, get on the mats and find out whether Jiu Jitsu is something they enjoy.
