ADULT JIU JITSU AT TJJA

LEARN JIU JITSU BY ACTUALLY TRAINING JIU JITSU.

At Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy, our adult program is built around learning techniques that work against real resistance.

You'll learn takedowns, positional control, escapes, submissions and the fundamentals of grappling—and you'll have the opportunity to put those skills into practice during live training.

We're primarily a No-Gi Jiu Jitsu Academy, and our room includes everyone from complete beginners to experienced competitors.

You don't need to be in shape before you start. You don't need a martial arts background. And you don't need to know what you're doing before you walk through the door.

That's what training is for.

WHAT TRAINING LOOKS LIKE

WHAT TO EXPECT IN CLASS

LEARN

We break down techniques and concepts so you understand not only what to do, but why it works.

DRILL

You'll work the technique with a partner and build the timing and reactions needed to actually use it.

ROLL

Live training gives you the opportunity to test what you've learned against a resisting partner.

You control your pace. Nobody expects a first-day student to keep up with someone who has been training for years.

Beginner BJJ Classes for Adults

OUR APPROACH

MOSTLY NO-GI. JUST JIU JITSU.

We train primarily No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at TJJA.

Instead of relying heavily on grabbing a traditional uniform, No-Gi Jiu Jitsu emphasizes controlling the body through positioning, pressure, grips and movement.

It's fast, practical and closely connected to the grappling used in MMA and wrestling.

We still train Gi Jiu Jitsu at times, but No-Gi is the foundation of our adult program.

WHY TRAIN AT TJJA?

GOOD TRAINING. NO NONSENSE.

EXPERIENCED COACHING

Nearly two decades of Jiu Jitsu, professional MMA experience and years spent coaching beginners, competitors and fighters.

BEGINNER FRIENDLY

You can walk in with zero experience. We'll help you learn the fundamentals and become comfortable on the mats.

REAL RESISTANCE

Technique matters, but you also need the opportunity to test it. Live training is an important part of what we do.

A STRONG ROOM

Your training partners matter. We want an environment where people train hard without making the room miserable for everyone else.

YOUR FIRST CLASS

New to Jiu Jitsu?

Start Here.

Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or MMA for the first time? You probably have a few questions. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from new students at Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, often called BJJ, is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on takedowns, controlling positions, escapes and submissions rather than punches and kicks. Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to use technique, leverage and positioning to control an opponent, making it useful for self-defense, competition and fitness.

At Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy, we teach both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for beginners and experienced students in Tupelo, Mississippi.

What should I expect at my first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class?

Your first class is about getting comfortable and learning how Jiu Jitsu works. You'll meet your coaches and training partners, learn some basic positions and techniques, and get a feel for how our classes are structured.

You don't need to know anything about Jiu Jitsu before you walk through the door. We'll help you get started and guide you through the class.

Do I need any experience to start Jiu Jitsu?

No. Most people begin Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with absolutely no martial arts or grappling experience.

Our classes are beginner-friendly, and you'll learn the fundamentals as you train. You don't need to memorize techniques, understand the terminology or know how to grapple before your first class.

That's what we're here to teach you.

Do I need to be in shape before starting Jiu Jitsu?

No. You don't need to “get in shape” before you start training. Jiu Jitsu itself is a great way to improve your conditioning, strength, mobility and overall fitness.

Everyone starts at a different fitness level. Train at your own pace, take breaks when you need them, and your conditioning will improve as you become more consistent.

Am I too old to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Probably not. Adults begin Jiu Jitsu at many different ages, and you don't have to train like a competitor to benefit from it.

Training can be adjusted to your experience, fitness level and goals. Whether you're interested in learning a new skill, getting in better shape, self-defense or simply finding something challenging to do, you can start Jiu Jitsu as an adult with no previous experience.

What should I wear to my first Jiu Jitsu class?

If you're attending a No-Gi class, comfortable athletic clothing such as a T-shirt or rash guard with athletic shorts is a good place to start. Avoid clothing with zippers, buttons or anything that could catch on a training partner.

For Gi classes, you'll eventually need a Jiu Jitsu Gi. If you aren't sure what you need for your first class, contact us before you come in and we'll help you get squared away.

Do you offer Jiu Jitsu and MMA classes for kids?

Yes. Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy offers Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kids MMA for ages 6–13.

Our kids programs teach real martial arts skills in a structured environment while helping young students develop confidence, discipline, coordination and problem-solving skills. Kids can learn Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, and our youth MMA training introduces striking, wrestling and grappling.
