BUSINESS & GROUP SELF-DEFENSE

PRIVATE SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING FOR YOUR TEAM.

Practical, hands-on training for businesses, organizations and private groups in Northeast Mississippi.

Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy provides private self-defense and grappling training built around your group—not a generic one-size-fits-all seminar.

From workplace groups and community organizations to law enforcement and private events, we'll structure the training around your people, experience level and goals.

No experience required.

PRIVATE GROUP TRAINING

NOT ANOTHER POWERPOINT PRESENTATION.

Self-defense is a physical skill.

You can't learn it by sitting in a chair and watching someone talk about what you should do.

Our group training gets participants on the mats learning practical concepts they can actually practice with a partner.

Depending on your group's needs, training may include positioning, escapes, controlling another person, grappling, situational self-defense and working through physical resistance.

Hands-on. Practical. Built around your group.

YOUR FIRST CLASS

New to Jiu Jitsu?

Start Here.

Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or MMA for the first time? You probably have a few questions. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from new students at Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, often called BJJ, is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on takedowns, controlling positions, escapes and submissions rather than punches and kicks. Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to use technique, leverage and positioning to control an opponent, making it useful for self-defense, competition and fitness.

At Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy, we teach both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for beginners and experienced students in Tupelo, Mississippi.

What should I expect at my first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class?

Your first class is about getting comfortable and learning how Jiu Jitsu works. You'll meet your coaches and training partners, learn some basic positions and techniques, and get a feel for how our classes are structured.

You don't need to know anything about Jiu Jitsu before you walk through the door. We'll help you get started and guide you through the class.

Do I need any experience to start Jiu Jitsu?

No. Most people begin Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with absolutely no martial arts or grappling experience.

Our classes are beginner-friendly, and you'll learn the fundamentals as you train. You don't need to memorize techniques, understand the terminology or know how to grapple before your first class.

That's what we're here to teach you.

Do I need to be in shape before starting Jiu Jitsu?

No. You don't need to “get in shape” before you start training. Jiu Jitsu itself is a great way to improve your conditioning, strength, mobility and overall fitness.

Everyone starts at a different fitness level. Train at your own pace, take breaks when you need them, and your conditioning will improve as you become more consistent.

Am I too old to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Probably not. Adults begin Jiu Jitsu at many different ages, and you don't have to train like a competitor to benefit from it.

Training can be adjusted to your experience, fitness level and goals. Whether you're interested in learning a new skill, getting in better shape, self-defense or simply finding something challenging to do, you can start Jiu Jitsu as an adult with no previous experience.

What should I wear to my first Jiu Jitsu class?

If you're attending a No-Gi class, comfortable athletic clothing such as a T-shirt or rash guard with athletic shorts is a good place to start. Avoid clothing with zippers, buttons or anything that could catch on a training partner.

For Gi classes, you'll eventually need a Jiu Jitsu Gi. If you aren't sure what you need for your first class, contact us before you come in and we'll help you get squared away.

Do you offer Jiu Jitsu and MMA classes for kids?

Yes. Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy offers Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kids MMA for ages 6–13.

Our kids programs teach real martial arts skills in a structured environment while helping young students develop confidence, discipline, coordination and problem-solving skills. Kids can learn Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, and our youth MMA training introduces striking, wrestling and grappling.
