COMPETITION TRAINING
TRAIN HARD.
TEST YOUR SKILLS.
Competition exposes the parts of your game that need work.
TJJA's competition training is built around hard rounds, experienced training partners and preparing your Jiu Jitsu to hold up when the pace goes up.
For competitors and experienced grapplers ready for harder training.
COMPETITION JIU JITSU AT TJJA
THERE'S TRAINING.
THEN THERE'S COMPETITION TRAINING.
Getting ready to compete requires more than learning new techniques.
You need rounds when you're tired. You need people who can put you in bad positions. You need to learn how to manage pace, pressure and time—and continue making good decisions when someone across from you is trying just as hard to win.
That's what these sessions are for.
Less talking. More rounds.

Preparing for an upcoming tournament? Get the rounds and mat time you need before competition day.
You don't have to compete every weekend to appreciate a room where people show up ready to work.
Thinking about competing for the first time? Get used to the pace and pressure before stepping onto the competition mat.
In town and looking for good rounds? Experienced visitors are welcome to come train with us.

WARM UP
We break down techniques and concepts so you understand not only what to do, but why it works.

SITUATIONAL ROUNDS
You'll work the technique with a partner and build the timing and reactions needed to actually use it.

LIVE ROUNDS
Live training gives you the opportunity to test what you've learned against a resisting partner.
KEEP GOING
Competition doesn't care if you're tired. Learning to make good decisions under fatigue is part of preparation.
Hard training doesn't mean reckless training. We're here to push each other, not injure each other.

YOUR GAME HAS TO WORK WHEN THE OTHER PERSON WANTS TO WIN.
Competition changes the way Jiu Jitsu feels.
The pace is higher. Positions matter. Time matters. Points matter. Small mistakes become bigger problems.
Our competition training gives students opportunities to work on:
Takedowns & Wrestling
Starting the match with confidence and developing the ability to decide where the match takes place.
Positional Strategy
Understanding when to attack, when to control and how to manage important positions.
Escapes & Defense
Getting comfortable working out of bad situations without panicking or giving up position unnecessarily.
Submissions
Developing attacks that can be applied against experienced, resisting opponents.
Pace & Conditioning
Learning how hard you can push while still making good decisions.
Competition Strategy
Understanding scoring, time management and how your approach may change based on the ruleset.
Train under coaches with experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, professional MMA and preparing athletes for competition.
Good competition preparation requires training partners who can challenge you and expose weaknesses in your game.
Work with different body types, games and experience levels instead of getting comfortable with the same training partner every round.
Competition may happen one-on-one, but nobody prepares alone. Your teammates are a big part of getting you ready.

Ready to try it? Your first class is free.
YOUR FIRST TOURNAMENT
THINKING ABOUT
COMPETING?
Talk to your coaches before you register.
We'll help you decide whether you're ready, what type of tournament makes sense, what rules you need to understand and what you should focus on leading up to competition day.
You don't need to feel completely ready before your first tournament.
Nobody does.
But you should prepare like it matters.
Not necessarily. Experienced students who want harder rounds can benefit from competition training even if they aren't currently preparing for a tournament. The important thing is being able to train safely at the pace of the room.
Competition training is generally better suited to students who already understand the fundamentals and can safely participate in faster, harder rounds. New students should build a foundation in regular Jiu Jitsu classes first.
TJJA primarily trains and competes in No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, although our students may participate in different types of grappling events.
No. Competition is completely optional. Plenty of students train Jiu Jitsu without ever entering a tournament.
Yes. Talk with your coaches before registering. We can help you understand what to expect and what areas of your training you should focus on.
Yes. Takedowns and wrestling are an important part of competition grappling and are incorporated into our training.
Competition preparation can vary depending on the event. Rules, scoring and legal techniques differ between organizations, so we'll take the ruleset into account when preparing athletes for a particular tournament.
