ADULT MMA AT TJJA

LEARN TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER.

Mixed Martial Arts isn't one style. It's learning how striking, wrestling and grappling work together.

At Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy, our MMA program combines striking, takedowns, wrestling, cage work and ground fighting into a practical system you can actually train.

You'll learn how to move and strike on your feet, defend and finish takedowns, control positions on the ground and transition between each part of the fight.

Some of our students want to compete.

Most just want to learn how to fight.

You don't have to step into a cage to train like a martial artist.

WHO TRAINS MMA?

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A FIGHTER
TO TRAIN MMA.

Never thrown a punch or wrestled before? That's fine. We'll teach you from the beginning.

JIU JITSU & STRIKING STUDENTS

Already have experience in one area? MMA teaches you how to connect your skills together.

GRAPPLE

Learn positional control, escapes, submissions and how grappling changes when strikes are involved.

You won't be thrown into hard sparring on your first day. Training intensity increases as your skills and experience develop.

Beginner BJJ Classes for Adults

THE COMPLETE GAME

The MMA Difference

STRIKING. WRESTLING. JIU JITSU.

Knowing how to punch is different when someone can take you down.

Wrestling is different when strikes are involved.

And Jiu Jitsu changes when the person on top can hit you.

That's what makes MMA different.

Our program teaches you how these skills connect—how to move from striking range into the clinch, finish or defend takedowns, control the ground and get back to your feet.

The goal isn't just to collect techniques. It's to learn how to use them together.

WHY TRAIN MMA AT TJJA?

REAL EXPERIENCE. REAL TRAINING.

EXPERIENCED COACHING

Learn from coaches with years of experience training, competing and cornering fighters in MMA.

BEGINNER FRIENDLY

You don't need a fight record—or any martial arts experience—to start learning MMA.

LIVE TRAINING

Technique has to work against resistance. As you progress, controlled live training develops timing, reactions and composure.

COMPETITION EXPERIENCE

For students who want to fight, TJJA has experience developing and coaching athletes for amateur and professional competition.

FROM THE TJJA MATS TO THE CAGE

TRAINING THAT HOLDS UP UNDER PRESSURE.

MMA is easy to talk about. It’s different when the cage door closes.

TJJA has helped develop and coach fighters who have competed at the amateur and professional level, including on the Bellator stage.

Watch one of our fighters put that training to work.

YOUR FIRST CLASS

New to MMA?

Start Here.

Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or MMA for the first time? You probably have a few questions. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from new students at Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy.

What is MMA?

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, combines techniques from striking, wrestling and grappling. At Tupelo Jiu Jitsu Academy, students learn how these skills work together, including punches, kicks, takedowns, clinch work, ground control and submissions.

Do I need martial arts experience to start MMA?

No. Complete beginners are welcome in our adult MMA program. You don’t need previous experience in boxing, wrestling, Jiu Jitsu or any other martial art before getting started.

Do I have to fight if I train MMA?

No. Most people who train MMA will never compete in a fight. You can train to learn practical skills, improve your fitness, challenge yourself or simply because you enjoy it. Competition is available for students who decide they want to pursue it.

Will I have to spar in my first MMA class?

No. Beginners aren’t expected to walk into the gym and immediately start hard sparring. You’ll begin by learning technique, movement and fundamentals. Training intensity increases as your skills and experience develop.

Am I too old to start MMA?

Probably not. You don’t have to be a young aspiring fighter to learn MMA. Adults can start training at different ages and fitness levels, and you can adjust the intensity of your training to your goals and abilities.

What should I wear to my first MMA class?

Wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely, such as shorts and a T-shirt or athletic top. You don’t need to buy a full set of MMA equipment before your first class.

What equipment will I need for MMA training?

As you continue training, you may need equipment such as boxing or MMA gloves, shin guards, a mouthguard and appropriate training clothing. We can help you determine what you need before you spend money on equipment.

What's the difference between MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu primarily focuses on grappling, positional control and submissions. MMA combines grappling with striking and wrestling, teaching you how to transition between fighting on your feet, in the clinch and on the ground.

Can I train MMA for fitness and self-defense without competing?

Absolutely. MMA training can improve conditioning, coordination, strength and confidence while teaching practical striking and grappling skills. You never have to compete to benefit from training.
